Bolero by Maurice Ravel Concert Band - Sheet Music

By Maurice Ravel

This work was composed in 1928 for the ballet of Ida Rubenstein. The musical structure is very simple, so to say, but briljant in its simplicity.A Spanish-like theme is so often repeated – almost unaltered – by different instruments or instrumental groups, that the listener gradually becomes captivated by its intensity. The strong point of this work is not formed by its melodic development – which is not there -, but almost exclusively by the orchestral colouring of the theme. This done over a sustained (ostinato) rhythm which froms the heartbeat of the entire work. The arrangement by Henk van Lijnschooten follows Ravel’s original instrumentation as closely as possible; the stringparts however have been allotted to the woodwinds with due care.Instrumentation0 Full Score A31 Full Score1 Piccolo4 Flute I4 Flute II1 Oboe I1 Oboe II1 English Horn2 Bassoon1 Clarinet Eb5 Clarinet I5 Clarinet II5 Clarinet III1 Alto Clarinet Eb1 Bass Clarinet1 Soprano Saxophone4 Alto Saxophone2 Tenor Saxophone1 Baritone Saxophone1 Cornet I3 Trumpet I3 Trumpet II3 Trumpet III1 Horn I F2 Horn I + II Eb1 Horn II F1 Horn III F2 Horn III + IV Eb1 Horn IV F2 Trombone I C1 Trombone I Bb (TC)1 Trombone I Bb (BC)2 Trombone II C1 Trombone II Bb (TC)1 Trombone II Bb (BC)2 Trombone III C1 Trombone III Bb (TC)1 Trombone III Bb (BC)2 Baritone C2 Baritone Bb (BC)4 Baritone Bb (TC)2 Bas Bb (TC)2 Bas Bb (BC)2 Bas Eb (TC)2 Bas Eb (BC)4 Tuba C1 Harp4 Percussion1 Percussion Various1 Timpani
