New Orleans, Louisiana is home to one of the oldest Black neighborhoods in the United States, known as Tremé. This area of New Orleans was an important place where the art forms of jazz, and rhythm and blues, as many well-known jazz musicians lived in Tremé. Music was heard on the streets or in nightclubs, featuring everything from performing homemade instruments to brass band parades.
The flavor of music from Tremé emphasizes the kick drum sound, which is an important part of this jazz composition. Beginning band students will be able to experience the fundamentals of jazz style through repeated rhythmic figures and the use of the B-flat major blues scales.
