By John Coltrane. By John Coltrane. Arranged by Lincoln Goines. This edition: pdf. Jazz. 11 pages. Lincoln Goines #1105948. Published by Lincoln Goines (A0.1532764).
This jazz blues classic from the 1958 album Blue Train suits the bass ensemble format well in its original key of Eb. This arrangement is in Afro-Cuban 2:3 clave style with a shout chorus that references Coltrane’s blues Mr. Day from the 1962 album Coltrane Plays the Blues.
In the Bass 4 part, the upper notes of the double stops in the B section are optional.
Performance Tips:
-Dynamics and accents should be exaggerated
-Maximum/minimum volume should match the dynamic range of the human voice-Amplifier/preamp bass frequency attenuation controls should be flat, even rolled back or switched off
-Carefully tuning to a common perfect fifth (eg. G and D, D and A) is critical.
