During the swing era, ‘Swingin’ The Classics' was a way to attract a more conservative audience to jazz. Almost every band leader participated, with varying degrees of musical success. This is an early example from the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra in 1937. The transcription differs from the original arrangement in that it is intended as a version that could have been played by the Benny Goodman Orchestra with Dorsey as soloist. The clarinet plays obbligatos over the first chorus, and the clarinet solo has of course been retained.
Scored for the line-up of the Benny Goodman Orchestra of 1935: solo clt/2 as/2 ts/3 tpt/2 trb/rhy. Tpt 1 to b2. The trombone melody is written an octave lower than on the recording; if your first trombonist has a strong high register, the melody can be played at the original pitch. The clarinet soloist must be a first-class ‘BG-wannabe’: fluent soloist, comfortable in the upper register. If your band has such a player: have fun!
