Brahms-like grandeur in a Moravian anthem

Unlike the many Moravian anthems that remind us of Handel, Haydn and Mozart, this beautiful piece sounds much more like Brahms, appropriate for its later 19th century origins. It requires an SATB choir of moderate size and reasonable musical accomplishment, and it is particularly well suited for large choirs and festival occasions. Dramatic changes in dynamics, ringing choruses and a strong accompaniment, effective on piano as well as organ, make BLESSED ARE THE PURE IN HEART an emotional experience for choir and congregation. I have sung it at least 20 times, and I am always moved by the sensitive melding of text and tune. It is far and away my favorite anthem from more than 40 years of performance. This anthem is a fine choice for any church that appreciates strong music and for performing groups looking to expand sacred repertoire.
