Composed by Michel Blavet (1700 - 1768). Arranged by Pat Spence. This edition: pdf. Baroque, Chamber, Graduation, Instructional, Wedding. 2 scores. 26 pages. Piper Publications #1360622. Published by Piper Publications (A0.1800439).

This sonata, originally for 2 flutes has been edited and arranged for 2 clarinets. The movements are well contrasted and make an enjoyable playing experience for players of intermediate standard and above. The well contrasted movements, Adagio, Allegro, Sarabanda, Corrente and Giga make an enjoyable concert item for both players and audience.

Editor’s notes

This sonata originally written ‘Pour deux Flutes transversieres sans Basse’ is the second of a set of six published by Boivin in Paris in 1728 as Blavet’s ‘Premier Oeuvre’. They were dedicated ‘a Son Altesse Serenissime Monsieigneur LE PRINCE DE CARIGNAN Par Mr. Blavet ordinaire de la musique de S. A. S.’ on the suitably elaborate title page.

In order to make the most of his sales opportunities , the sonatas were printed using the soprano G clef which places the G on the bottom line of the treble staff, a practice which was not uncommon at the time. This enabled bassoon and cello players to read the parts and would have inflated sales.

In view of these circumstances, I had no qualms about arranging this Sonata for two clarinets.

Blavet was not only the best flautist in France but also an extremely good bassoon player so would have found this clef easier to read from as he was not a keyboard player. This edition has been transcribed to the now established treble clef with G on the second line. Trills shown in the original as + are shown in this edition as tr. Curiously Blavet used a flat (b) to cancel a sharp instead of a natural even when the sharp was only an accidental.
