Black Diamonds – Miners’ March opens with an eight-measure brass fanfare that immediately establishes a bold, ceremonial atmosphere. The sharply articulated opening calls evoke strength, solidarity, and the proud tradition of mining communities.

The principal strains unfold in firm march rhythm, combining driving momentum with broad, balanced phrasing. The musical material suggests determination and collective energy, reflecting the symbolic meaning of “black diamonds” — coal — long associated with labor, endurance, and industrial heritage.

In the Trio section, the well-known Miners’ Anthem is presented in a dignified and cantabile setting. The lyrical character of the hymn contrasts with the assertive opening strains, bringing a moment of solemn tribute within the march framework. Following the Trio, a short transitional passage intensifies the texture and prepares the structural return. A written D.S. to the Trio brings the hymn back in full, placing emotional emphasis on the anthem as the culminating element of the work.

By concluding with the reaffirmation of the Miners’ Anthem rather than the opening material, the march shifts its focus from ceremonial display to collective identity and homage. The result is a concert march that balances fanfare brilliance with commemorative depth.
