The occasion was an art exhibition by Viktor Hartmann, a close friend of Mussorgsky's who had died unexpectedly young. Mussorgsky was so moved that he set ten of his paintings to music – hence the title.
The work is a musical gallery, a very personal homage by Mussorgsky to his friend Hartmann. It is about memory, grief, inspiration – but also humor and grotesque elements.
The “Promenade” theme is almost like a self-portrait of Mussorgsky, which recurs and changes – depending on how he reacts emotionally to the pictures. Originally, the work was intended for solo piano, a suite of ten pieces plus the recurring “Promenade” theme, which represents the visitor walking from picture to picture.
Today, it is mainly the best-known orchestration by Maurice Ravel (1922) that is played.
