By Lou Christie. Composed by W. Franke Harling, Leo Robin, Richard A. Whiting. Arranged by Martyn Clive Johnson (aka Martycli Piano Guy). Film/TV,Instructional,Jazz,Ragtime,Standards. Score. 14 pages. Martyn Johnson #1096812. Published by Martyn Johnson (A0.1523039).
'Beyond the Blue Horizon' is a 1930 song composed by Leo Robin, Richard A. Whiting and W. Franke Harling that was first performed by Jeanette MacDonald in the 1930 film 'Monte Carlo'. I know it from the Lou Christie version but it has been recorded by many others including Johnny Mathis, Artie Shaw and his Symphonic String Orchestra and perhaps most notably by Martycli Piano Guy in 2024!
I have arranged it in a stride piano style as invented by James P Johnson, Willie the Lion Smith and Fats Waller amongst others from the ragtime era onwards. Scott Joplin and Jelly Roll Morton are big influences for me.
I don't notate dynamics, pedal or fingering as no two piano teachers ever agree on these things and I prefer to make the sheet music as friendly as possible by just sharing the notes and letting the individual pianist interpret the piece in their own way. I do include chord symbols which for me are one of the most important pieces of information in learning and remembering a piece.
For those with smaller hands the 10ths can be rolled, played as octaves or as single bass notes.
Please note this is a solo piano transcription. I have not included notation for the other instruments contained in my YouTube video. I write all my pieces firstly as piano solos and they sound perfect as such.
I hope you have as much fun learning this as I did arranging it. Best of luck.
