Written in 1931 by Egbert Van Alstyne, Haven Gillespie, Wayne King, and Victor Young, Beautiful Love remains one of the most enduring and widely performed jazz standards. Its elegant harmonic structure and lyrical character have inspired countless interpretations, including the iconic 1961 recording by Bill Evans.
This arrangement is scored for a classic Jazz Combo of four horns and rhythm section, and is designed at an intermediate level, making it suitable for a wide range of ensembles without demanding advanced technical skills.
The chart opens with a series of short solo statements over four fermatas, each featuring a different horn. The melody is then stated by alto saxophone and guitar, supported by the rhythm section in a medium-slow feel. The texture gradually builds as trombone and additional horns join, leading into a fuller ensemble sound.
Following the opening section, the melody is passed between alto saxophone and trumpet, culminating in a harmonized statement by the full horn section. A brief modal pickup replaces the final bars of the theme, introducing a modulation to F minor and a new medium-up swing feel.”
The solo section includes optional background figures (on cue), with a suggested length of up to four choruses to maintain pacing and audience engagement. A short ensemble feature follows, with the horns trading fours with the drums.
The final statement of the theme returns to the original key of D minor before modulating to E-flat minor, adding variety and intensity.
The arrangement concludes with a restatement of the modal pickup—this time functioning as a coda—gradually bringing the piece to an effective and controlled close.
Approximate performance time: 5:30.
As always, I hope you enjoy this arrangement.
Enjoy the music!
