Published by David Maddux (A0.1844350).Sonny Bono wrote this 1967 hit as a wry cultural survey of what changes and what doesn't: fashions shift, dances come and go, but men still march off to war and the bum still cries for a dime. The recording session at Gold Star Studios in Hollywood featured an all-star lineup from the Wrecking Crew — including Dr. John on piano and Carol Kaye, who devised the song's distinctive syncopated bass line on the spot, replacing the walking bass in the original arrangement. When guitarist Barney Kessel finished the session, he reportedly stood up and declared, "Never have so many played so little for so much." The song peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100, became Sonny and Cher's third top-ten hit, and has since been enshrined on Sonny Bono's tombstone. This TTBB arrangement gives the timeless lyric a fresh choral swagger.
