In this scene directly following the title song Beauty and the Beast, the two share a moment on the balcony. Belle shares her worries about her father, who she’s been separated from. The Beast shows her an enchanting magic mirror, which will allow her to see anything her heart desires. When she discovers her father is in danger, the Beast frees Belle - she is no longer a prisoner of his castle.
Composer Alan Menken references the melody of the title song "Beauty and the Beast" throughout this cue, as well as the 3-note character motif for the Beast (upward minor seventh, then downward whole step). When the magic mirror shows Belle her father’s worsening conditions, the melody from "Belle" (“Ah, isn’t this amazing…”) plays in a minor key with a passionate string orchestration.
Beauty and the Beast (1991) was the winner of 2 Academy Awards (best original score and best original song), with many more Oscar winnings to follow for Alan Menken. Orchestrations for the film were done by Danny Troob and Michael Starobin, elevating Menken’s modern Broadway sensibility with rich, symphonic textures in Menken's signature thematic style.
This arrangement for solo piano is a reduction of the full orchestra, and is suited for Easy Intermediate pianists. Chords are marked throughout. An additional staff is shown as needed to include instrumental elements that could not be fully condensed (for the performer's reference).
