Be not afeard 4-Part - Digital Sheet Music

Chorus Choir (SATB) - Level 4 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1721916

Composed by Edmund Jolliffe. This edition: pdf. 21st Century, A Cappella, Classical, Contemporary, Contemporary A Cappella. 10 pages. Reify Music Ltd #1285029. Published by Reify Music Ltd (A0.1721916).

Be not afeard (From The Tempest, Act III, scene II). This is an upbeat a cappella setting of Shakespeare. A perfect concert opener. It is the first movement in Edmund's 'Sleep Cycle' - a 25 minute 7 movement piece. This is the explanation Caliban gives to Stephano and Trinculo about the mysterious music they hear by magic. He compares this to a dream. The music alternates between fast and calmer moods, echoing the light sleep of stage 1 where one can be awakened easily and experience sudden muscle contractions. Released as part of Kantos Chamber Choir's album 'In your dreams'. Duration 3'30". Review of 2025 recording by Kantos from The Arts Desk: ‘Kantos sing with confident resonance in Edmund Jolliffe’s rollicking (initially) and noble (later) Be not afeard.’

Be not afeard; the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight, and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears; and sometime voices,
That, if I then had waked after long sleep,
Will make me sleep again: and then, in dreaming,
The clouds methought would open, and show riches
Ready to drop upon me; that, when I waked,
I cried to dream again.

William Shakespeare, 1564 - 1616.
