Bats' Mez Ter is a piece for solo soprano and SATB choir. It is an arrangement of a penitential ancient Armenian hymn sung during the Door-Opening rite on the evening of Palm Sunday. After the forty days of Lent, the faithful gather before the closed church doors and sing this prayer, “Open to us, Lord,” which accompanies the symbolic reopening of the doors and marks spiritual renewal.
Musically, the chant is modal and slightly melismatic, unfolding with restrained introspection typical of the Armenian sacred tradition.
