Composed by Danny Elfman. Arranged by David McCaulley. This edition: pdf, streaming. 20th Century, Contemporary, Film/TV. 99 pages. David McCaulley #1392945. Published by David McCaulley (A0.1833276).
This transcription for wind ensemble of Danny Elfman’s dark and epic main theme from “Batman” is intended to be as faithful to the original orchestral score as possible. Doing this, though, naturally presents some challenges. For one, the original orchestral recording had enormous instrument sections, using 5 individual flute parts, 6 horns, 6 trumpets, 4 trombones, 2 bass trombones, and 2 tubas. This arrangement simplifies these forces to a much more standard number of players while using much of the same voicings from the original as possible. The other challenge is perhaps more obvious, being that the complex string parts have to be translated to the string-less wind ensemble somehow! As is done in many orchestral transcriptions, the string parts are divided between the various woodwind instruments to recreate the original string parts. This naturally can introduce some not-so-idiomatic writing in the woodwind parts, but great care has been taken to balance faithfulness and playability in these instances. Other than some other small changes, the individual instrument parts are mostly presented as they are in the original score.
