Barlow's Blues is a perfect introduction to the 12 bar blues form and swing style for your young jazz band. Careful consideration was given to articulations in an effort to help young musicians learn the "unwritten" rules of swing style to help them sound like pros faster. Additionally, rhythm section parts are written to show basic parts for guitar, piano, bass and drums during the first 12 bars which can be used throughout the chart, and then introduces the idea of slash notation and reading chord changes immediately afterward. Students can train their hands what to play when looking at slashes early in their musical development.
Written in the key of Bb for traditional jazz band (5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, rhythm section), but 4th trumpet and Bass Trombone parts are optional. Lead trumpet written up to G5. Written, stylistically appropriate solos provided for Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Trumpet and Trombone.
This piece was written as a dedication to Mr Fred Barlow, former principal of Rockvale Middle School and a band director himself, in honor of his years of service to RMS and his unwavering support of the Rockvale Middle School Band.
