Freddie Mercury had been fascinated by opera since the 1980s.
At a concert in 1983, he met the world-famous Spanish soprano Montserrat Caballé. She was one of his great idols.
In 1986/87, they met again, and Freddie suggested they collaborate.
The title song “Barcelona” became an anthem for the city and later even the unofficial anthem of the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.
It combines operatic arias with Mercury's typical rock/pop vocals.
It was one of the first times that a classical opera star and a rock musician recorded a piece on such equal terms.
The lyrics are a declaration of love for the city of Barcelona, but also for the meeting of two worlds – rock and opera.
It is a common misconception that Barcelona was composed especially for the 1992 Olympic Games.
The album was composed in 1987-1988 and was a tribute to the city.
The plan was for Freddie Mercury to sing live with Montserrat Caballé at the opening ceremony.
Unfortunately, Freddie Mercury died in 1991, a year before the Games. Therefore, only a recording was played, accompanied by a huge fireworks display.
