Barbie Girl – 40s Style Laid-Back Swing
Arranged by Albert Ahlf

This clever reimagining of “Barbie Girl” transforms the pop classic into a laid-back 1940s swing chart for advanced high school vocal jazz ensembles. Scored for three-part female harmony, the arrangement features tight jazz voicings, stylish swing phrasing, and a retro feel reminiscent of the Andrews Sisters, making it right at home in a vocal jazz concert or show-choir-adjacent program.

The chart balances sophisticated harmony with playful character, creating a true crowd-pleaser that still challenges singers musically. Syncopated rhythms, smooth voice leading, and space for expressive swing interpretation give experienced ensembles plenty of musical depth to explore.

For added fun and contrast, the iconic line “Come on Barbie, let’s go party” may be doubled by a male singer in a low baritone octave, creating a humorous call-and-response effect that audiences love. This optional feature makes the arrangement especially effective in mixed programs or jazz choirs with access to a male soloist.

An optional small-ensemble horn section is included, featuring trumpet, alto saxophone, trombone, and optional clarinet (doubling the trumpet part) or tenor saxophone (as an alternative to trombone), along with a bass/guitar part for rhythm section support. Drum set players may follow ensemble hits from the trumpet part, performing primarily with brushes and alternating with ride cymbal and rim on beats 2 and 4 to maintain an authentic swing feel.

Optional improvised solos may be added over the chord changes in the familiar “Come on Barbie, let’s go party” section, providing additional flexibility for vocal or instrumental jazz interpretation.

Great for:

Advanced high school vocal jazz or chamber choirs
Ensembles looking for a humorous yet musically legit swing chart
Concerts, pops programs, or themed retro sets
A stylish, tongue in cheek swing arrangement that lets singers show off both their jazz singing and their personality.
