The birth of Philip Sparke’s second son, Benjamin, was the inspiration for composing Ballad for Benny. A short calm introduction leads to the main ballad theme, a gentle waltz melody. Following the work’s climax in which the complete band plays the main theme the sound fades and the piece ends in calm and serenity.
Die Geburt seines zweiten Sohnes, Benjamin, inspirierte Sparke zu der Komposition Ballad for Benny. Eine kurze, ruhige Einleitung führt uns zum balladenartigen Hauptthema, einem lieblichen Walzer, gespielt von Klarinette und Saxophon. Der Walzer erreicht einen Höhepunkt und führt zu einem Zwischenteil mit Passagen in Terzen für Flöte, Klarinette und Altsaxophon. Dieser steigert sich wieder zu einem Höhepunkt, welcher das Hauptthema mit den Blechbläsern aufs Neue vorstellt, nun gespielt von den Blechblasinstrumenten. Diese Wiedergabe des Themas durch das gesamte Blasorchester geht über in eine auf dem Zwischenteil basierende kurze Koda, mit welcher das Stück ruhigendet. Aufregend und gefühlvoll zugleich, wie der Anlass der Komposition.
