Norwegian composer Johan Halvorsen composed incidental music for the play 'Vasantasena' in 1896 while he worked as a theater conductor in Bergen. Later he selected four numbers for performance as a concert suite of which the 'Bajaderentanz' (Hindu Dance), is the second movement. Since its publication in 1897 the suite has come to be regarded as one of Halvorsen's most successful scores.
