This tune was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Original Song in 1949. Frank Loesser and his wife performed an earlier version at private parties prior to its inclusion in the MGM movie, Neptune's Daughter. The show was one of several produced by MGM with the successful formula of talented, attractive Ester Williams in a bathing suit. The music is feature in a scene with Williams and Recardo Mantalban which transitions to a verse with humorist Red Skelton and Betty Garrett. The lyrics are a model for overcoming arguments with gentle persuasion.
The banter of the duet is handled in this arrangement by the first and second parts. The upper register represents Ester Williams and is contrasted with the lower register, representing Ricardo Mantalban. If used with the optional rhythm section, there is a solo chorus for the piano and trombone (chords in trombone 3).
