Bartok's appeal to Serbian folklore is not accidental; he owed this in part to his own family ties. His father considered himself Hungarian, but his paternal grandmother was from a Serbian family. Bartok was a major folklorist collecting folk melodies from the Balkan countries, Central Europe, Asia Minor and North America. This passion of his fueled many musical ideas and was seen in the choice of thematic material in the vast majority of his music. “Tree Rondos on Slovak Folk Tunes” is one of such great examples of songs originally written for piano. In my orchestral transcription, this composition should be colored with colors of various timbres and their combination. Sometimes one even gets the impression of imitating a peasant amateur orchestra, where there is a place for a strange combination of notes reminiscent of the discordant playing of musicians, and a vivid juxtaposition and contrast of various elements of music, and even a hint of a possible animation in the third Rondo. All this taken together leaves a pleasant and slightly tart aftertaste like from simple peasant food.
