Composed by "Cradle Song" version by William J. Kirkpatrick (1885); "Mueller" version by James R. Murray (1887). Arranged by Thomas C. Baggaley. This edition: pdf. Christmas, Holiday, Religious, Sacred, Traditional. 10 pages. Quest Haven Publishing #1218634. Published by Quest Haven Publishing (A0.1652114).
The Christmas carol "Away in a Manger" first appeared in the late 19th century in America. Its first known printing dates back to 1882 in The Congregationalist, a Boston-based publication, where it was misleading titled "Luther's Cradle Song," although the attribution to religious reformist Martin Luther has since been shown to be in error. The lyrics of the carol were likely written by an anonymous American author, and the song gained popularity through various publications in religious and children's magazines throughout the 1880s. Over time, the carol was set to different melodies, the most enduring of which are "Mueller" by James R. Murray (1887) and "Cradle Song" by William J. Kirkpatrick (1895). This arrangement draws from both of these popular melodic settings.
"Away in a Manger" has become one of the most beloved Christmas carols, especially among children. This choral setting is designed to not only capture the warmth of the carol but also references the glorious nature of that special moment in history, as you can almost hear choirs of angels joining in to sing the gentle lullabye.
