The piece unusually sets the familiar text within an aching minor key, in a slow tempo, and with generally quiet dynamics. A highly memorable, singable and repetitive main theme is supported by rippling arpeggios over a descending bass line. Within the rocking 6/8 time signature, an often modal accompaniment also features chains of gently warm seventh chords. The piece is appropriate for most standards of solo soprano or tenor, or unison choir. This Ave Maria, by the same composer, is also available from Sheet Music Plus in versions for SATB choir, and for SA choir.
