Mathilde was born on 3 December 1857 in Linz on the Danube, the daughter of the glass-making industrialist Wilhelm Kralik. Her musical talent was promoted from an early age by music-making at home. Her father's financial circumstances allowed her to devote herself totally to music, and she had private lessons in Vienna from Anton Bruckner before taking up studies at Vienna Conservatory in 1876, where she received first prize for her composition Intermezzo aus einer Suite (Intermezzo from a Suite). Her catalogue of works comprises over 250 opus numbers, including 3 operas, over 100 songs, masses, melodramas and chamber music works. Th e Christian faith was a strong support in her life and many of her compositions have a religious theme. As a musician she was well known on the Viennese concert scene around the turn of the century. She died in Vienna on 8 March 1944.
