William L Gillock (July 1, 1917 – September 7, 1993) was an American music educator noted for his many pedagogical piano compositions. Because of the melodic strength of his music he has sometimes been called "the Schubert of children's composers".
Gillock composed over 300 pedagogical piano pieces—short, engaging works in a variety of historical and cultural styles. His music remains widely available and is often included in graded exam collections.
His most prolific period was from 1956 to 1969. Notable collections include New Orleans Jazz Styles, the Accent on series (eight volumes, 51 pieces), and the Piano All the Way method.
Larger works include Little Suite in Baroque Style, an introduction to contrapuntal playing, Sonatine in Classic Style (1963), and Lyric Preludes in Romantic Style (1958, 24 pieces in all keys).
Popular individual pieces for beginner to intermediate players include Aeolian Harp, Fountain in the Rain (1960), Goldfish (1964), Carnival in Rio, New Orleans Nightfall, and The Prowling Pussy Cat.
