"Aura Lee" is an American Civil War song written by George R. Poulton in 1861. It is both a classic in American Folk Music and a sentimental ballad. The tune is familiar to modern audiences because the melody was used in Elvis Presley's 1956 hit song "Love Me Tender." Many different covers of this music have been recorded over the years by an assortment of artists. This arrangement for String Trio opens with the instruments in close harmony, but in the 2nd section, the cello diverts to playing accompanying pizzicato arpeggios. For the third verse, the cello solos on the melody in its rich bass register while the violins play an obligato descant. The "D.C. al Fine" brings it all back to the original harmonies for a stunningly simple finish.
