George R. Poulton was an English-born American musician and composer, best known for composing the melody for the song "Aura Lea." Born on October 16, 1828, in Cricklade, Wiltshire, England, he was baptized in St. Mary's Church and was raised in the town until the age of seven when his parents emigrated to Lansingburgh, New York. Poulton's compositions, particularly "Aura Lea," became popular during the American Civil War and were later featured in college glee clubs and barbershop quartets. The tune was also sung at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. In 1956, the tune was given new lyrics and released as the Elvis Presley song "Love Me Tender." Poulton's musical legacy continues to be celebrated, and his descendants still have connections with Cricklade. He passed away in 1867, leaving behind a rich musical heritage.
