Auer: Lensky's Aria from Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, Op. 24 (Arr. Violin and Orchestra)
Lensky's Aria, "Kuda, kuda"; is one of the most poignant moments in all opera: a young poet's farewell to love and life before his fatal duel in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin (1879). Leopold Auer, the legendary violin pedagogue and teacher of Heifetz, Elman and Milstein, created a masterful transcription that transfers the aria's soaring vocal line to the violin, and it has been a treasured part of the concert repertoire ever since, recorded by artists from Heifetz to Janine Jansen and Daniel Lozakovich.
This new MyMusicScores edition goes a step further. Rather than the usual piano accompaniment, this arrangement restores the music to its true orchestral setting — drawing directly on Tchaikovsky's own scoring. The orchestration has been carefully reduced from double winds and four horns to single winds (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet in B♭, Bassoon), two Horns in F, and Strings; because the original second wind parts carry very little independent material. The result is a practical, beautifully balanced orchestral accompaniment that preserves the rich harmonic palette and timbral warmth of Tchaikovsky's writing, without demanding the resources of a full symphonic wind section.
The solo violin part follows Auer's transcription faithfully, with its long, singing phrases, expressive portamento, and demanding cantabile playing — a true test of tone production, musical maturity, and stage presence at Diploma/Professional level.
