Early Verdi again, and it has its strengths and weaknesses. What some call weaknesses -- his very almost overly done dramatic cabalettas -- actually are some of the most exciting parts of the score. Basses are very lucky, as those super dramatic moments fall to them. The drama is tightly knitted together, and there are very few moments that drag. A wonderfully exciting opera, even if seen by some as almost vulgar. This edition is an excellent buy with additional music Verdi wrote, mostly for the tenor, a number of different arias. As usual, the history of the opera and its performing history is well-informed (though with many such things, sometimes very dry reading). And like all the critical editions I have purchases, we bound, very clear print, and a good buy.
