“Atlantic Floor” resists classification as either traditional composition or conceptual cartographic transcription. In effect, it is both.
Drawing its melodic logic not from emotion or theory, but from the raw bathymetric undulations of the Atlantic Ocean floor, this solo piano work traces the 33.0205° parallel—a sonic pilgrimage from the shores of South Carolina to the coast of Morocco. The result is a musical artifact not composed in the conventional sense, but revealed—a contour line rendered audible.
This is not nature as muse, but nature as author. Where landscape painting once sought to depict, this work seeks to defer—to let the Earth’s submerged body speak in its own strange grammar, channeled through the keys of a piano.
