These Asynchronies were conceived in a classroom setting as a practical demonstration of the expressive potential of asynchronous modes — structures in which each octave presents a different intervallic design. The complex that organises the entire piece, {4[2,2], 3[2,1], 2}, derives directly from the name of the student to whom the work is dedicated, serving as the generative matrix for its
whole musical architecture.
Luís Vaz de Camões (1524–1580)
Os Lusíadas, Canto IX, stanza 31
Th’immortal Furnaces wherein they forgèd
for their swift arrows points that penetrate,
with fiery Hearts by way of fu’el are gorgèd,
and Vitals vital still that palpitate:
The temp’ering waves wherein the tips were mergèd,
are lovers’ Tears in love unfortunate:
The live bright light and never-failing fire
is ever burning ne’er outburnt Desire.

Pera as setas as pontas penetrantes,
Por lenha corações ardendo estavam,
Vivas entranhas inda palpitantes:
As águas onde os ferros temperavam,
Lágrimas são de míseros amantes,
A viva flama, o nunca morto lume,
