"Ask" is a gentle SATB anthem with piano accompaniment, intended for church choirs. It sets the scriptural passage "Ask and it will be given unto you, seek and you will find," etc., with the word "ask" recurring as a plaintive sigh. The four voice parts are equally active but within a very manageable range: sopranos only up to C in the staff, basses down to A-flat, tenors mostly E-flat or below but with two top-line Fs. Harmony is primarily triadic but with some quartal chords (chiefly in the accompaniment). Rhythm is not at all complex. The predominant key is F minor but the blessing contained in the words demands ending in F major.
