Renowned fiddler and composer Jay Ungar and Molly Mason, his musical partner and wife, have run the Ashokan Fiddle and Dance Camp in upstate New York for many years. Jay wrote Ashokan Farewell in 1982 at the camp seasons end, to express the sense of loss he felt after the departure of the musical community. The melodys sweet, haunting sadness proved to be a perfect match for Ken Burnss 1990 PBS series The Civil War, which introduced it to millions of viewers. In this guitar arrangement, the bass line enters as an ascending response to the melody, which is then harmonized in sixths and thirds the second time through. The arrangement is a good study in position shifting up and down the fingerboard, and provides a great showcase for dynamic and tonal nuance in the phrasing of the melody. It is an excellent concert selection and will be a popular addition to the repertoire of any guitarist. Written in standard notation.

Touching song
Dropped-D tuning, no TAB - if you cannot read music well, this may give you some difficulty. There are no page turns! It is a very touching, bittersweet song, and I really enjoy playing it. I recommend it if you enjoy folk/Celtic.

Ashokan Farewell Guitar arrangment
I've played guitar for some 30 years and am finally devoted to classical. After 16 months of study I'd consider myself a strong intermediate. OK, my opinion. I've always liked this song, incorrectly assuming it was some 19th century waltz, love song or some sweet ballad. Although it fit perfectly into Ken Burn's series The Civil War, it has a great story all it's own. Music and arrangement are beautiful and rewarding. At my level I ran into a few difficulties but is well worth the effort.
