Worship leaders, choir directors, and weary clergy dreading the annual Advent/Christmas avalanche of tasks, take heart! Here's a simple, singable, theologically accurate and properly Trinitarian solution for at least part of your "what can I do this Advent/Christmas season that will be fresh, yet timeless, and that my people will be able to manage?" I composed this piece, "As We Light this Candle" for use by church congregations and choirs of all ages, throughout the liturgical season of Advent. It is a simple, strophic, yet also highly singable song, suitable for congregational singing because of the catchy melody and the repetition of the main melodic and rhythmic elements. Your people will have both the tune and the message of this contemporary hymn in their ears and their hearts quite easily, before you'd expect them to, making it an excellent choice to use with your Advent wreath-lighting liturgy each Sunday, throughout the Advent season.
There are five verses in this hymn, which you are free to rearrange to suit your own Advent traditions; in my denomination, the Advent themes are Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love, so that's how I've arranged the text, but the verses are easily changed around, if your church prefers a different order. The hymn can be sung progressively, beginning with verse one, chorus, verse one again on week 1 of Advent, then verse one, chorus, verse two on week 2, then verse one, chorus, verse two, chorus, verse three on Advent 3, and so on, all the way up to singing all five verses with the chorus on Christmas Eve, OR, if you need more musical coverage, you are also free to sing all five verses each week, or to use the hymn as written, with five verses, as a Christmas Eve stand-alone hymn. I saw a children's choir perform it last year on Christmas Eve, as the Advent wreath was being lit, and the effect was quite beautiful.
This piece of liturgical service music was also featured in the United Church of Canada's national "Advent Unwrapped" project in 2024.
