Composed and recorded by Stan Kenton in the 1940s, Artistry in Rhythm became his signature and a true classic from the big band era. Paul Murtha has skillfully adapted and truncated this chart for younger players while maintaining the flavor and energy of the original. Solo piano starts things off, followed by the iconic trombone solo in the medium Latin section. The exciting double-time swing section features the entire ensemble, then the “maestoso” theme returns to close things out. Impressive!

Playing a Kenton Classic is a Blast!
As an adult learner, I love diving into big band tunes, and this 'Artistry in Rhythm' score is incredibly fun. It's Grade 3, so it's challenging but totally achievable for weekend playing. Paul Murtha’s arrangement captures the energy of the original Stan Kenton recording, especially the solo piano intro. It's so rewarding to play a piece that sounds so close to the classic big band era. Highly recommend for enjoyment!

Solid Big Band Classic, Gig-Ready
A reliable chart of Stan Kenton's 'Artistry in Rhythm.' Paul Murtha's Grade 3 arrangement keeps the original's energy while being practical for various events. The parts are well-formatted, and I appreciate the dynamic arrangement that maintains the big band feel without being overly complex. Good for school and community gigs where a classic jazz ensemble sound is requested. Assumed clear chord symbols for the rhythm section.

Dynamic Piano Role in a Classic Jazz Ensemble
This 'Artistry in Rhythm' arrangement offers an engaging role for the collaborative pianist within the jazz ensemble. The piano's initial solo sets the stage, followed by robust rhythmic and harmonic support throughout the various sections. It's a great example of a piano part that truly integrates into and drives the big band texture, rather than merely doubling. A solid choice for ensemble pianists.
