Composed as a tribute to generations of American servicemen and women buried at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C., this powerful and emotional work is a fitting addition to any memorial occasion or patriotic concert. Offstage trumpets announce the opening theme followed by reverent strains and a solemn statement of My Country, 'Tis of Thee. The piece develops and builds gradually, reaching a heroic climax with the familiar hymn God of Our Fathers before returning to a quiet and reflective mood as the offstage trumpets return. Superb Orchestration for Band Voices
While 'Arlington' isn't a vocal piece, as a musician focused on voice-leading, I'm impressed by Paul Murtha's meticulous arrangement for concert band. The way each instrumental section supports the primary melodic lines, building texture and emotional depth, is exemplary. It's a fantastic study for understanding how 'voices' interact and create a unified, powerful statement. A quality Hal Leonard arrangement.

Inspiring Piece for Community Bands!
Absolutely loved playing Paul Murtha's 'Arlington (Where Giants Lie Sleeping)' with our community band! The emotional journey of the piece, from reverent strains to the powerful 'God of Our Fathers,' is incredibly rewarding.
