Johann Nepomuk Král was an Austrian-Hungarian military bandmaster, conductor and composer with Bohemian roots. His more than 200 compositions contain mainly marches and Viennese style dance music, but also overtures and at least one operetta. The Polka francaise op. 90 Arlberg was composed on the occasion of the completion of the Arlberg railway tunnel in 1884 and dedicated to the Committee of the Railwaymen's Ball in Vienna. Arlberg is an important mountain pass for the east-west connection in Austria. Its tunneling was a technical masterpiece. Arlberg is not only the origin of alpine skiing, but also hosted international World Cup ski races and the 2001 World Ski Championships. The arrangement is one half tone higher than the original key for symphony orchestra and was first time performed on 21 April 2014 by the Municipal Band of St. Anton am Arlberg, Tyrol, Austria conducted by Günther Öttl.
