Viola da Gamba, Viola da gamba - Level 5 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1885725

Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Daniel Rippe. This edition: pdf, streaming. Baroque, Chamber, Classical, Early Music, Traditional. Score. 11 pages. Daniel Rippe - RipMeister Publications #1444392. Published by Daniel Rippe - RipMeister Publications (A0.1885725).

Bach offers us a lesson in Baroque ornamentation in BWV 1056 by embellishing his own well-known melody found in the opening “Sinfonia” of BWV 156. This arrangement for advanced viola da gamba player with keyboard (organ, harpsichord, or possibly lute) begins with the simpler melody and follows with the highly decorated version from Bach’s later harpsichord concerto. The YouTube link leads to a full performance of this score.

G major score on four pages. Bass viol part on two pages.

This is a scholarly performance edition including a preface with background information and performance notes. Includes editorial fingerings and bowings.

Bach did not title this piece “Arioso.” The melody has become known by that name in countless published arrangements for various solo instruments since the early 20th century. Now, finally, we have one for viola da gamba. For intermediate players, RIP-17 is available which uses only the simpler well-known melody from BWV 156.
