The Goldberg Variations (BWV 988) officially called Aria with 30 variations was written between 1741 an 1742 at the request of Count Kayserling, Russian Ambassador at the Court of the Lector of Saxony, and a frequent visitor to Leipzig.

Often in poor health, the Count judged it best to soothe himself with music, and to this end he appointed one of Bach's pupils, Johann Theophilus Goldberg (1727-56), to play him approbrate music on a harpsichord in the room adjoining his bedroom.

Since his poor health and insomnia continued, Count Kayserling eventually c ommissioned Bach to write a work that could be taken up at almost any point, and played up to any other point, which explains why a variation form was chosen.

According to the Bach scholar Johann Nikolaus Forkel (1749-1818), the request was for music tat 'should be of such a soft and somewhat lively character, the he might be a litttle cheered up in his sleepless nights.'

Until this time, Bach had considered wirgting variations as a rather thankless task, bearing in mind that the same harmonies would have to underlie the structure even if the actual theme were varied. But he accepted the challenge an produced set of variations that enshrines a wealth of invention, variety and mood.

Here is an excerpt of the Aria for Violin and Cello which can be used almost anywhere suitable.
