This arrangement reimagines Heitor Villa-Lobos’ most iconic masterpiece for a modern guitar orchestra. While the soprano vocal part remains completely untouched, the accompaniment is a hybrid evolution based on the original 1938 orchestration for eight cellos and Villa-Lobos’ own later adaptation for solo guitar and voice.
Duarte’s setting is a "stylistic what-if," composed with the intent of capturing how Villa-Lobos himself a devoted cellist and guitarist might have approached the work had the large-scale guitar ensemble been a standard formation during his lifetime.
Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887–1959) is the cornerstone of Brazilian art music. His Bachianas Brasileiras (a set of nine suites) represents a fusion of Brazilian folk soul with the contrapuntal architecture of Johann Sebastian Bach.
