The title stems from Principal Louise Archer, who was principal of what became Louise Archer Elementary School, a permanent black elementary school in Vienna, VA. Written in Eb Major in 6/8 meter, Archer Overture features a festive and heroic melody, initially stated by the low brass, after a percussion introduction. This motive builds and progresses throughout the remaining instruments, as well as the composition as a whole. It has a Rondo-like formal structure, ABCBDCA, with percussion interludes articulating a few of those sections.
