By Guido Menestrina. Composed by Fernando Sor. Arranged by Guido Menestrina. This edition: pdf, streaming. 19th Century, Romantic Period. Score. 4 pages. Guido Menestrina #1406501. Published by Guido Menestrina (A0.1846881).
E' interessante vedere come Sor prende posizione netta all'interno del movimento abolizionista.
A French-language piece by Spanish composer Fernando Sor, generally best known for his early Romantic solo guitar music. The lyrics' reference to Greek independence allows us to date the composition around 1832. The topic of the abolition of slavery was hotly debated in Europe between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, especially considering that France had abolished it in 1794, but Napoleon reintroduced it a few years later. It's interesting to see how Sor took a clear stance within the abolitionist movement. At the same time, the piece's heroic and stylistically "military march" character is noteworthy, given that it is an appeal to French soldiers. Transcription by Guido Menestrina.
