The song reached the number one position on the charts in several countries, becoming the biggest hit of Collins' career worldwide. In the week of Christmas 1989, it became the seventh and final number one of his solo career in the United States. It stayed at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks, becoming the last number one of the 1980s and the first number one of the 1990s in the country. It also reached the number one spot on the charts in Germany, Canada, Norway, and Sweden.
In Collins' homeland, it reached second place on the official chart, as well as in Austria. It managed to become the third most played song on Brazilian radio in 1990, a feat unprecedented for Collins at the time.
