Anitra's Dance by Edvard Grieg Acoustic Guitar - Digital Sheet Music

By Edvard Grieg

I offer an arrangement for finger style guitar of Edvard Grieg’s Anitra’s Dance from the Per Gynt Suite. The piece works extremely well for the guitar, exploiting many different right and left hand techniques. The left hand has many legatos, pull-offs, and hammer-ons, in addition to staccatos for base notes. Muting for pizzicatos is done with the right hand in extended passages. There are also many nicely placed harmonics woven into the arrangement, some of these demanding a total left hand command of the fretboard.I have chosen the tempo of Allegretto for the first part and a slightly slower tempo for the second part that allows the performer-interpreter more space in which to move between the many chords and key changes. The piece should be played lightly with an air of mystery that matches its modal-minor character. Many of the chords, especially in the second part, should be played as ever so slight arpeggios to recreate the singing of the strings in the original orchestra version.I give extensive left hand fingerings but refrain from right hand fingerings as I believe that guitarists capable of playing the piece will find fingerings that suit their own personal styles. Depending on the skill of the interpreter, the piece could be played at a faster tempo, i.e. Allegro. The arrangement is intended for advanced intermediate to advanced guitarists.
