Angela is one of the favorites from Bob James' album entitled “Touchdown.” Angela is immensely popular due to the producers from Paramount Television Series “Taxi” choosing this piece as its theme song.
Angela is smooth and should also be reflected in the performance. Your singers will enjoy its laid back approach in performing, and tight harmonies. This is great for any vocal jazz group.
A few things to consider:
The introduction features a tagged line that is sung by both the sopranos and altos. Be careful to have them work together to form their melodies. It should be thought of as one line sung by two different sections. It should be assumed that they complete each other's thoughts.
Snaps are encouraged throughout the song. If you are blessed to have a vocal percussionist, have them study the original recording to get ideas for executing the hiss from the hi-hats and the relaxed percussive sounds. It's certainly not busy.
Any time there is a duet, they should be less intense in comparison to the soloist.
Lastly, the “d’s” used in “dah,” and “doom,” should also be laid back. Use a less plosive “d.” A dental d is preferred.
