“Angel” (1997), by Canadian singer/songwriter Sarah McLachlan, commemorates the death of musician Jonathan Melvoin who died on a heroin overdose. It quickly became the ‘unofficial anthem of mourning’ following tragic events such as the death of Princess Diana, the Columbine High School massacre, September 11th – thus it is often played at funerals and memorials services. McLachlan says of her song of sorrow and loss: it is about “trying not to take responsibility for other people’s problems and trying to love yourself at the same time”. The song was used in the movie City of Angels (1998). This arrangement is scored 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment. Performance time: 4:12+-.
