Composed by Graham Yates. This edition: pdf. 21st Century, Classical. Score. 17 pages. Graham Yates #1290354. Published by Graham Yates (A0.1728373).
Duration: 9 minutes. Songs: 1. The Kiss (1915, Florence Kiper Frank), 2. Your Hands (1923-27, Angelina Weld Grimké), 3. The Rushlight (1913, Michael Mecredy), 4. Episode (1920, Winifred Bryher). Composer's Notes:
“Always Here” is a collection of songs I composed for a Pride-themed concert in Austin, TX in 2025. Mezzo soprano Page Stephens collaborated with me for the premiere. The cycle features texts by queer poets from over a century ago that I found published on Dick Whyte’s Substack, Forgotten Poets. Whyte generously shared his research, encouragement, and knowledge of the poems and their writers with me.
Each poem invites us to consider not just the writer’s unique experience as a queer person living in the distant past, but the poem’s mundanity, too. Though the writers’ lives were (arguably) much different than those of the queer community today regarding visibility and openness, we see them grapple with the natures of love, relationships, and humanity in much the same way we ourselves might, or another of their contemporaries might. In fact, we may not even realize we are reading queer texts except by knowing something about the authors.
“Always Here” reminds us that queer people have always existed, and that their experiences continue to shape our own. Across time, we are all worthy of expressing and sharing our experiences, both because of and in spite of our unique biographies. We are worthy in the diversity and commonality of our perspectives.
