This is a wonderful collection of Klezmer music, inspired by the Jewish dances and songs of the klezmorim from Eastern Europe: from the lyrical Hora to the fast, compelling Freilach. Also audible is the influence of more recent Israeli folk music a la Giora Feidman. Some of the pieces have a second part ad libitum - for laying together or for variation in a repeat. For the accompaniment, chord symbols have been added, and on the enclosed CD there are complete versions as well as play-along versions of all pieces, played live by genuine Klezmer musicians.

  • A Ganef - A swindler
  • der Mirjambrunnen - After an old fairytale
  • di Mechaje - Joy
  • dudaim - After an old fairytale
  • Harrys Freilach - Harry Timmermann-a famous Klezmer-Clarinet player in Berlin
  • Lomir Tanzn - Let's dance
  • Main Umet - My sorrow
  • Mordechaj - Hora for Mordechaj Gebirtig, famous songwriter from Krakau
  • Naftules Freilach - Natule Brandwein-a famous Jewish musician
  • Nanis Vals - A Waltz for Nani
  • Nigun - A song without words
  • Odoms Nechome - Adam's comfort
  • Scholem sol sajn - There has to be freedom
  • Shalom - Freedom-three-part round
  • Stempenjus Fiedel - A famous Yiddish fiddler
  • Tates Freilach - Freilach for father
  • The Ragged Freilach - A Freilach and a Ragtime together
  • Zorres un Masel - Sorrows and luck

All-time Klezmers
I was disappointed that the solo instrument was clarinet and not violin, as I was led to believe. However, each tune has a charm of its own and is a delight to play. The accompaniment only part of the CD gives violinists plenty of scope to experiment and put their own stamp on the tune. Alternative notes given in the melody could provide some effective duets. I intend to put this into practice with my flautist friend.
