Dr. Boyer left behind a legacy of music, mentorship, an unwavering dedication to the arts, and a deep commitment to building community.
Royce was a piano tuner, an academic, a musicologist, a church musician, and a driving force behind the development of art music in Huntsville, Alabama.
He tuned more than 100,000 pianos over his lifetime, right up to the week of his hospitalization. Royce founded the Department of Music at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, serving as its first department chair. He was named Professor Emeritus in 1997.
His church music ministry spanned 45 years – the final 24 at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity in Huntsville.
Royce was a force of nature in the greater Huntsville music community, participating in the establishment of the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra, Community Chorus, Chamber Music Guild, Youth Orchestra, and the Arts Council.
Royce Boyer will be remembered for his artistry, his mentorship, his storytelling, and his steadfast belief in the power of music to build community and transform lives. His legacy lives on in every note sung, every ensemble formed, and every life he touched with his quiet wisdom and generous spirit.
He was also a friend.
